Tiny Design Issues Matter – Jordan's iPhone Challenge

Last year, Jordan was lucky enough to get a family hand-me-down iPhone 5 to use with wifi. It gave her a chance to take pictures, FaceTime and text me while I was out fo town for work travel. If you’ve followed us this year, Jordan’s grown up a lot this year. She’s communicating design ideas, meeting people across the country and trying to stay in touch with her friends locally as well. She is a huge fan of musical.ly and she loves to FaceTime, her friends. She’s a digital kid with a digital mom who is keeping a close eye as she navigates it all.

So, when we stumbled into a phone deal, Jordan has her next phone and this time, it’s a real functioning iPhone. But there was a design issue that has bothered us as Jordan transitions into this new phone experience.

Late last year, I found a phone case that looked like a purse. It came with a handle that made it simple to hold with Jordan’s hand or her little arm. It’s come to be a helpful way to manage a phone.

But her new phone is a different style and doesn’t fit that case. But Jordan has enjoyed being able to use hand or arm to carry it around. We set out to investigate different options. I discovered most iPhone cases do not have a way to add a lanyard. It’s a bummer. The best solution I could find is this TFY Security Handstrap. With a case to protect the phone, we wrapped the strap on the corners of the phone and so far, it seems like the best option for now. If you have found any additional ideas, let us know!

    Hi Jordan
Awesome you got an iPhone!! My granddaughter who is your same age always tries to FaceTime me in he morning before I have had my coffee!!! Yikes!!
When I read your story I immediately went to Amazon to see if there was a case with a lanyard for the iPhone 5!!!
Yes there are a few and very inexpensive!
Tell your mom to search it on Amazon!
You know I never thought about a case with a lanyard and it is a very cool idea!!! Think I may get one for days I don’t want to carry my purse!
Oh sweetie I hope one of these will work for you! I will be watching your next post!
Oh and FYI… you are very photogenic! But I am sure that is not the first time you have heard that!!!
    Take care sweetie!

Thanks, Susan! There are a number of lanyard phones for the iPhone 5, but Jordan is lucky to have a new 6s. There aren’t lanyard case options that fit what she’s looking for! But I think our newest solution is working! Jordan smiled and said thank you about your photogenic comment. 🙂

I know several people who use Clip Hangers to be able to attach their phone to a lanyard, belt loop, etc. It also gives the phone a “handle” that rotates.

Could she use an iPhone holder that people who run use? It looks similar to what you have with the elastic but it might be sturdier.

That’s a great idea. Jordan’s focused on phone handles that she can use on either arm or hand at the same time. She wants versatility! I think we certainly should try a runner case and see what she thinks!
