Destroying Limitations

A number of months ago, a runner in town asked me if I’d be interested in taking part in supporting the local disabilities community – he told me he worked at the local disabilities support organization and noticed I support special needs. Of course I said yes. I wasn’t planning on running in an official race until my half marathon in October – but this was perfect timing. I could run in a 10K and see my timing leading up to my big race. (I’m not a competitive runner. But I like to challenge myself!) So when John McNail asked if I’d be interested in wearing a shirt in support, of course I said yes! He told me how he and a few other people who work at Boone County Family Resources were training clients to run in the race, I was so excited. Jordan is a client – BCFR offers grants to help me pay for her prosthetics and pays for Jordan and I to attend Camp No Limits. Fast forward to this past weekend… John was right, this was something special. He, co-worker (and co-creator of this team) Justin Wann and 20 or so others wore shirts in pride and ran in the race. Most of us ran in the 10K. John and Justin pushed one of their clients in his wheelchair for the 13.1 miles of the half marthon. But close to the end of the race, Tucker got out of his wheelchair and was able to walk across the finish line with the strength of John and Justin. It was awesome to see and that’s why I shot some video of it:

The backs of our shirts said: “Destroying Limitations… one stride at a time.” It’s true. I’m so proud to have been able to give a little bit of support by wearing the shirt and cheering for the team. I got to meet many more people at Boone County Family Resources and I got to know the stories of some of the clients. I also ran my fastest 10K ever. It was a great combination.
