Bravery, development… And I didn't have a camera

After what was supposed to be a non-stop rainy weekend… We had weather that granted us all kinds of time to enjoy the great outdoors. So we got the kids out on their bikes. Jordan got on her tricycle and Cameron on his new bike. Our house isn’t far from a really big parking lot that is pretty empty on the weekend… But we live in a hilly neighborhood and you have to deal with those hills to get to the flat parking lot. Cam wasn’t very interested in riding his bike on the hills… Jordan was willing to sit on her bike, but push that bike with her feet – very limited pedaling.

But when she got to the parking lot – she pedaled and pedaled and pedaled. it was amazing to sill this little girl with a little bike work so hard to get that little bike moving. Her bike doesn’t have a lot of torque – so she has to work hard to keep it moving. I MUST get video of her. It was so fun to watch. Thanks to equestrian therapy, she doesn’t even put up a fuss when it comes to wearing a helmet. I am so proud.

On our way home, she pedaled some of the hills… She’s not so sure about going fast. But she’s getting braver by the day. I can’t wait until we can really do bike riding as a family. She’s probably a year away… and if we can get our prosthetist to really work up a way to use a bike hand, she’ll be really stable at the same time. I can’t wait for that!

I chuckled as i read that…My girls STILL do not own a bike, cannot RIDE a bike and don’t seem to grasp the exchanging feet concept that is required to pedal.
How nice to have a big lot to ride to and then let the kiddos ride around for a bit!
I LOVE the pic of Jordan in the purple dress with the flowers around her. SO beautiful!! Have a wonderful week!

You know, I am not sure how I got connected with your website several months ago, but I have a daughter that is a LBE congenital amputee and she is 4. She rides her bike everywhere…my husband got the bright idea (after watching her play in her little tykes kitchen, putting her little arm (which she calls “Bob”) in and out of the sturdy cup which came with the kitchen set) to use the cup and attach it to her handle bar. He put a thick piece of felt in the bottom so it would be soft and attached it to her bike. She also uses it on her scooter. It helps so much because she doesn’t have to lean so far forward. It helps her to remember to look up, because as she was leanign over so much before, she kept just looking down (recipe for disaster). We are a U.S. military family living in Norway…we don’t have any services at all for Lily for while we are here, so we have had to make do with what we can do ourselves. Just an idea! Thanks for letting me show my daughter pictures of your daughter…someone else with a “bob”. :o)

I love that idea!! Jordan is always putting her little arm into ANYTHING that it fits in. I love how Lily calls her little arm “Bob!” Jordan hasn’t taken any time to name her arm… But she is starting to talk about it more. It’s wonderful to meet you and I’m glad you shared the bike idea!
